Dry Skin Treatments at LAB Skin Clinic, Neutral Bay – Call 02 9909 3602 – can help reduce and eradicate one of the biggest skin issues you face living in an urban area…
One of the biggest issues we treat, today, is a lack of hydration in the skin. Dehydration is caused by a failure of the acid mantle (your skin’s natural protection), which gives rise to multiple problems because the skin becomes vulnerable to environmental aggressors; this results in skin irritation, which responds with inflammation and is often observed as diffused redness.
When your skin is dehydrated, it will have a dull, lifeless and thickened appearance. Frequently, these symptoms are inappropriately treated with harsh ingredients and ablative treatments that artificially perform the function that the skin’s enzymes should do naturally.
To remedy dehydrated skin, we first analyse your skin’s structure and how it is functioning before setting to work to restore your skin’s return to homeostasis (balance).
Usually skin imbalance (dehydration) is caused by poor cleansing ingredients, skin-care products that strip the skin of its natural protective oils, or causes it to shift from its natural acidic pH into an alkaline state, and/or harsh and aggressive treatments – all of which disturb the skin’s delicate balance.
NOTE: It is now known that daily application of acid containing skin care will leave the skin in a constant state of micro-inflammation and chronic inflammation will lead to the formation of self-destruct enzymes that destroy collagen and elastin fibres as well as hyaluronic acid.
Over the years, we have observed the very best results are achieved with skin care products that are formulated to support as well as hydrate and balance the skin. Changing to a supportive skin care regime can have dramatic results in a very short period of time.
Scientific research has shown that aggressive, inflammatory procedures, which are widely used as corrective therapies (such as ablative laser and dermabrasion) damage the skin unnecessarily. At LAB Skin Clinic, we have a variety of treatment modalities that have been developed for medical applications and cosmetic use. We customise a treatments using one or several: micro current, oxygen hydration therapy, electro-muscle stimulation (EMS), Omnilux LED, and electroporation therapies, which are much more gentle on the skin yet designed for maximum effectiveness, with visible results often achievable after just one treatment. Supporting results with super-hydrating serums is a necessary part of re-balancing and controlling dehydration.
For beautifully hydrated skin that behaves well and is smooth, plump and radiant, call LAB Skin Clinic on 02 9909 3602 for a complimentary consultation or click on the link below to make an appointment.
The primary causes of dry, dehydrated skin:
- Intrinsic Ageing – the normal process of physical change over time that is more about genetics than lifestyle. Sebaceous gland activity tends to decrease with age, compromising the skin’s natural ability to regenerate oil production and comprising its protective lipid barrier layer, as well as reduced blood flow to the skin, which may cause a drop in sebum production.
- Environment – Prolonged exposure to the sun causes water to evaporate from skin, which is why sunburned skin requires more moisture than unexposed areas. Cold wind, low humidity, air conditioning, heating and low temperatures can also dry out skin and contribute to dehydration and thus premature ageing.
- Lifestyle The trend for fat-free diets can deprive your body of skin-friendly Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). This deficiency can result in chronic itching, dryness, scaling, thinning and can lead to an imbalance in prostaglandins (chemical messengers that do many things, such as control inflammation). As well, excessive alcoholic beverages and certain medications (such as nasal decongestants) can also contribute to dry skin or dehydrated skin.
One of the biggest consequences of dry, dehydrated skin is an increase in sensitivity, as dryness and dehydration are precursors to sensitized skin. Addressing it quickly can help stave off issues of sensitization. However, don’t immediately gravitate towards prescribing super-emollient cleansers and creams, as emollient products could aggravate dehydrated skin that’s also classified as oily. A thorough skin analysis is your ultimate tool in the successful treatment of this challenging skin condition.
