So, what are FRECKLES?
Freckles are small, flat, tanned and circular spots, which are usually slightly darker than the surrounding skin. Freckles are randomly located on cheeks, nose, arms, upper shoulders and legs and are the result of heavy depositing of melanin in one spot in the skin.
Freckles generally occur after repeated exposure to sunlight, in people who have a genetic tendency to develop them (those with blond or red hair, light-colored eyes and fair skin). They will become darker and more apparent after sun exposure and lighten in the winter months.
Fair-skinned people, prone to freckling and sunburn, are also more at risk for developing skin cancers.
Most skin damage occurs under the age of 18 so prevention is more desirable than removal:
- Avoid being in the sun without sun-protection.
- Use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30+
- Wear wide-brimmed hats (6 inches)
- Wear sun-protective clothing (shirts, long sleeves, long pants)
- Avoid exposure to the sun during the peak hours of 10 am to 4 pm
For effective freckles treatment, it is important, first, to accurately locate the hyperpigmentation to the epidermis or the dermis, which is done, professionally, with the use of various skin imaging technologies.
Professional options: Exfoliation, peels, microdermabrasion, LED light, laser, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments and skin lightening creams can all fade pigment spots to a greater (total removal is possible) or lesser degree, but the pigmentation will return with sun exposure.
Products: plant-based lightening actives can be used during most technology therapies, but be aware that most plant derived products cannot penetrate deep enough to reach the melanocytes* because the molecules of these products are too large. Plants or plant-based substances that are capable of lightening the skin include Licorice, Beta carotene, Birch, Sangui sorba officalinis, Scutelaria baicalensis, Bearberry and Mulberry.
*Melanocytes are located at the bottom of the epidermis, in the stratum germinativum. To provide results, a product must reach the melanocytes in order to inhibit or regulate the tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for the activity of the melanocyte system, which is why we recommend technology-based treatments because they penetrate deeper into the dermis.
