IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is an advanced, medical-grade technology, which delivers bursts of light emitted by a xenon “flash lamp” properly channeled to the surface of the skin through appropriate focussing optics.
This technology is the most effective and most comfortable system on the pulsed light market: energy is transmitted in the form of a single pulse of constant power. This technological advance makes it possible to work with optimal efficiency.
Unlike lasers, IPL devices release their light in a broad spectrum and a wide range of wave lengths, which means a large variety of aesthetic problems can be treated.
How Does IPL Work?
When IPL penetrates the skin, the light is absorbed by natural pigments: melanin, haemoglobin and water, called chromophores. Chromophores turn the light into heat and direct it to the treatment target. IPL is used for permanent hair reduction and skin rejuvenation
Intense Pulsed Light is a proven technology for measurable and effective skin rejuvenation results – in particular when applied to the face, neck, lower neckline, décolletage, and hands.

How does IPL Skin Rejuvenation work?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) handpiece is applied over your skin and a series of flashes (pulses) are emitted at regular short intervals. The light penetrates the epidermal layers of the skin and is absorbed by the dermis. The heat impairs the vessel and the body begins a natural healing process by increasing fibroblastic activity, which is responsible for producing collagen in the skin, and a correct layer organization is induced
As you age fibroblastic levels decrease, showing more signs of ageing. By increasing fibroblastic activity lines will be softened, the skin will be more hydrated, the blood supply is stimulated and oxygen flow to the tissues is increased resulting in a wonderful youthful glow.
IPL and SPL also increase protein synthesis. Muscles are largely made up of protein, so by stimulating and increasing synthesis they become more lifted, plumped and rejuvenated and the skin appears more refined with softened lines and wrinkles.
Is an IPL Facial Treatment safe?
IPL and SPL parameters ensure safe and effective operation. IPL technology has been safely used for over 30 years and ongoing clinical trials conducted by leading authorities on pulsed light document its safety and effectiveness.
Does it hurt?
It is not painful, although it can make you jump at high energy levels and you may feel an uncomfortable sting if you want a strong result. Most clients tolerate IPL treatments extremely well because the cooled head creates surface numbing, which keeps the procedure as pain free as possible.
While you comfortably relax on a treatment bed with protective eye goggles, your therapist will apply a cool, clear gel onto the treatment area and a smooth crystal handpiece is gently placed in contact with the gel. A flash of light lasting a few milliseconds is delivered to the treatment site (this can make you jump). This process is repeated with an overlapping until the entire area has been treated.
How many treatments are necessary?
Many clients report excellent results after just three to four sessions, but everyone is different and the exact number of session will be determined by the result being targeted. For some clients, a more aggressive treatment is possible, which delivers even faster results.
Ongoing maintenance may be necessary to maintain results; however that will depend upon lifestyle. The more effective you are at protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun, the less need you will have for IPL facial treatments in the future.
While times may vary, optimal results typically peak within eight to twelve weeks.
Are there any side effects?
There are a few contra-indications but they are determined during the initial diagnostic consultation.
Side effects are usually superficial. After a treatment, it is possible your skin may appear flushed, hyper-brown pigmented or dirty-looking, spots may appear darker and capillaries may be more visible. This is perfectly normal and occurs because the abnormal pigment starts to appear on the surface of the skin. This will naturally exfoliate after about 3 to 7 days.
In fact, the more reactions you have, the better your result will be.
