Rosacea … What is it?
Also known as acne rosacea, over 10% of people in Australia suffer the symptoms and signs of rosacea – and it is increasing…
Rosacea (or acne rosacea) is a chronic condition, characterized by facial erythema (redness) and sometimes pimples, and it affects all ages. The condition primarily affects women, more than men, between the ages of 30 and 60, of north-west European descent, who have fair skin and tend to flush or blush easily. The condition is hereditary.
Rosacea typically begins as redness on the central face across the cheeks, nose, or forehead, but can also less commonly affect the neck, chest, ears, and scalp. In some cases, additional symptoms, such as semi-permanent redness, telangiectasia (dilation of superficial blood vessels on the face), red domed papules (small bumps) and pustules, red gritty eyes, burning and stinging sensations, and in some advanced cases, a red lobulated nose (rhinophyma) may develop.
Although the cause is unknown, stress, infection, menopause, vitamin deficiency, carbohydrate overload and endocrine abnormalities can aggravate the disorder as well as anything that causes flushing, e.g. hot beverages (tea and coffee), spicy foods, tobacco, alcohol, physical activity, over-exposure to sunlight, anxiety, emotional stress and extreme heat or cold. Left untreated, Rosacea will worsen over time. So to prevent the condition from worsening, the correct management and treatment of Rosacea is essential.
The following are important:
- Correct identification is vital
- Avoid flushing triggers
- Use hypoallergenic moisturisers & sunscreen daily
- Avoid irritants such as soap, cold winds and over-the-counter cosmetics
- Avoid facial products containing alcohol, astringents and other known irritants
- Topical hydrocortisone preparations worsen the condition and should be avoided
The most effective treatments combine prescribed active cosmeceutical skincare with IPL, gentle peels and oxygen therapy.
