lab-spa-clinic-spider-veins-2What Is a Spider Vein?

Spider veins (also known as Telangiectasias) are small, dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin, or mucous membranes, measuring between 0.5 and 1 millimetre in diameter. The backed-up blood in these vessels causes them to appear as blue, red or purple lines on the legs, face or other areas of the body. Spider veins may form as short, unconnected lines or create patterns resembling a spider web.

Spider veins can develop anywhere on the body but are commonly seen in clustered areas on the face around the nose, cheeks, and chin. On the face, we treat spider veins as a cosmetic issue.

Facial Spider Veins: Causes and Solutions

Spider veins can often be unsightly when they occur on the face and because they are so prominent they can blur more beautiful facial features. Once spider veins have arrived, they can only be removed through cosmetic intervention and maintenance to avoid them returning.

Causes:

Sun Exposure

Sunscreen is a crucial tool in avoiding skin cancer and the pain of sunburn. However, high amounts of sun exposure can also lead to the development of facial spider veins, especially if you have a fair complexion. The sun’s UV rays break down the collagen in the walls of the spider veins, causing them to get thinner and spread out.

Solution: Avoid direct exposure to the sun; if you can’t, then use sunscreen! Its importance cannot be overstated. Ensure you use a high SPF cream (we recommend Pevonia Hydrating Sunscreen SPF30) and apply it whenever you know you’ll be subjected to prolonged sun exposure. Take special care with your nose, which often takes the brunt of sun damage.

Rosacea

Sometimes, facial spider veins appear as a symptom of rosacea, which can also cause redness, inflammation, acne and oily skin on areas of the face. Rosacea is a progressive disorder and may cause some people to develop vascular rosacea, which is the phase in which facial spider veins typically occur.

Solution: Preventing the triggers that can aggravate the condition, such as exposure to wind and sun, changes or extremes in temperature, diet, exercise and stress, will significantly lessen its occurrence and help to halt progression. If you suspect you have rosacea, please call us on 02 9909 3602 or email info@labskinclinic.com.au to seek immediate help. Rosacea will worsen over time.

Other Causes

For most people who develop spider veins, heredity is the root of the problem, making prevention difficult in many cases. However, these other conditions lead to the development of facial spider veins:

  • Acne rosacea
  • Allergies
  • Carcinoid syndrome
  • Chemotherapy
  • Chronic vomiting
  • Corticosteroids treatment
  • Environmental damage such as sun or cold exposure
  • Excessive coughing or sneezing
  • Limited systemic sclerosis/scleroderma
    • Liver disease
    • Lupus
    • Oral contraceptive use
    • Pregnancy
    • Radiation exposure, e.g. radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer
    • Scleroderma
    • Steroid use
    • Traumatic injury to the cheek or nose area – such as contusions or surgical incisions

At LAB Skin Clinic, telangiectasias on the face are treated with either IPL, Laser, Micro-Needling or Omnilux light-based technologies, which seal the veins and cause them to dissolve.

These treatments are safe and effective.

However sclerotherapy is the popular ‘gold standard’ treatment and is frequently preferred over IPL and laser for eliminating the more resistant telangiectasias – especially around the nose area.

During a sclerotherapy procedure, a sclerosing solution is injected into the affected blood vessel, which irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to form scar tissue and fade away.
